Older PLHIV – Western Australia

WAAC recognises that ageing with HIV can be problematic if carers, family members and physicians aren’t familiar with the common struggles that can be experienced as a person living with HIV ages. A practitioner guide outlines some of the main issues experienced by those ageing with HIV. The aim of article is to educate the workforce on how to address these issues.

Integrated Support Services, formerly known as Clinical Services, was established in 1985, with the incorporation of the Western Australian AIDS Council. Integrated Support Services meets the support needs of many people living with HIV (PLHIV). During this time the program has witnessed many changes in community attitudes and in HIV epidemiology.

These changes have also prompted regular reviews of the model upon which we provide services, and the projects and programs which can best meet the needs of PLHIV into the future. The two key services are case management and peer support.

The goal of case management is to promote and support independence and self-sufficiency, also for older PLHIV. Case managers provide practical, physical and emotional care and support for people living with HIV, their families, carers and partners. The case management process requires the consent and active participation of the client in decision-making, and supports a client’s right to privacy, confidentiality, self-determination, dignity and respect, compassionate non-judgmental care, culturally competency, and quality case management services.

In addition to assisting clients to access and maintain specific services, case management activities may include negotiation and advocacy for services, consultation with providers, navigation through the service system, psycho-social support, supportive counselling, and general client information and education.

Positive Peer Education – Peer Education Officers can provide a range of information, education and peer support strategies for people living with HIV, to enhance their health and wellbeing. This vital role provides one-on-one support, facilitates in person and online groups, seminars, workshops and social networking. Peer Education Officers can assist with advocacy, referrals and support for families and affected others.

‘WAAC Input From you’ (WAACIFY) aims to bring together PLHIV to walk alongside WAAC in a collaborative and co-design principled way. WAACIFY members provide ideas, feedback and guidance on identified WAAC related resources, projects and initiatives.

WAACIFY meetings are designed to be respectful and collaborative to foster values of community and friendship. Members are able to give feedback on the perceived success of campaigns and activities developed by WAAC and have an opportunity to voice community issues and feedback.

Part of the OPAN network, Advocare provides free, confidential and unbiased support to empower older people. It gives them information and choice so that they can make informed decisions to live the life they want on their own terms. This includes dealing with concerns over home care or residential care services, and helping to prevent elder abuse.
