This is a list of services available for Older PLHIV living in the Australian Capital Territory.

Meridian: HIV and Ageing

The HIV Peer Support service provides advice and health advocacy to support PLHIV dealing with the challenges of ageing. This includes linkages to appropriate health care services; and advocating for government supports.

Meridian’s Aged Care Navigators service is also open to people living with HIV. This service helps people to navigate My Aged Care, aged care home support services and residential aged care providers, among other things.

Meridian: HIV Services

This Meridian program provides support services for people living with and impacted by HIV and AIDS in the Canberra region. The HIV Services:

  • promote peer to peer activities for PLHIV
  • deliver client support and advocacy services
  • provide counselling services.

Meridian also promotes programs with partner organisations, and conducts targeted health promotions.

ACT Disability, Aged and Carer Advocacy Service
(ADACAS)

ADACAS is an independent not for profit advocacy organisation that is part of the nationwide Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN). It promotes and protects the rights of older people and their carers, as well as people with disability and those experiencing mental ill-health problems.

The ADACAS Older Persons Advocacy Team provides free advocacy for people aged 65 years and over residing in the ACT and Queanbeyan. The specialist team also supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples aged 50 years or older. The support can help you to:

  • Maintain your independence
  • Navigate the aged care system and connect with service providers that will meet your needs
  • Learn more about the rights of older persons
  • Identify and take action on elder abuse
  • Express your values and make decisions about things that affect your life
  • Have the dignity to take risks
  • Resolve problems or complaints about aged care services
