An annual CD4 count may be adequate, say scientists, for people doing well on treatment. A study has shown that the probability of a decline in CD4 cell count to below 200 in people with a suppressed viral load did not differ according to whether they were monitored annually or every six months.

“This suggests,” said the researchers, “that less frequent CD4 measurement does not miss important immunological events in patients with viral suppression. Annual CD4 monitoring in virally suppressed patients with a baseline CD4 of 250 may be sufficient for clinical management.”
