Victoria saw an increase in HIV diagnoses in 2013, displaying a clear upward trend over the past three years. The number of new diagnoses hit 303 — the highest figure since the early 1990s. The introduction of rapid HIV testing goes some way to explain the rise: evidence shows more men who have sex with men (MSM) are testing, and testing frequently. Yet although MSM account for around 90% of people living with HIV in Victoria, approximately one in five new diagnoses are outside this group — 2013 saw a worrying rise in new HIV diagnoses among women of 62.5%.
